Current Event Article

Issue: Human trafficking is one of the most rapidly growing crimes in the world, the case is presented a major problem for countries such as Moldova. The Moldovian government recognizes the problem and has been working with OSCE on drafting the anti-trafficking act. The article presents three cases in which women were the vicitims of human trafficking in Moldova.

Significances: 1)William Hill stated that the problem in Moldova has reached it's peak by the late 2001.By that time Moldova was the largest supplier state in all of Europe.
2) The ones who become the victims usually live in poor condtions in their country and easily agree to leave it order to seek for a better life.
3) In most cases the victims are offered work abroad. However, as soon as they arrive into a foreign country, their papers are taken away and they become slaves of human trafficking.

Analysis: The source is reliable as it informs us about the issue in Moldova as well as provides three cases of women who the victims and reflecting their personal experinces on this matter. It also gives a better understanding of the seriousness of the problem that is being created as a threat to innocent people who might become victims without having enough knowledge on the matter.

Issue: UN reports that Human trafficking is highly under prosecuted crime in Europe. Press Trust India report states that fewer people were captured for human trafficking in Europe than for less frequent crimes as kidnapping.In 2006,only 9,000 were victims were reported,about thirty times smaller than the estimated number of people being trafficked.

Significances:
1)The most common victims sold for sexual exploitation were women then chikdren and men who were forced to work in constriction and agriculture.
2)According to the report a great portions of victims coming from China,Phillipines,Thai and Vietnam were recognized in the report.
3)In Europe,Bulgaria and Romania are considered to be countries at the most rate for human trafficking victims.
4)The research also shows that the victims of human trafficking are most commonly women. Also the number of prosecuted female offenders is higher for human trafficking than any other crime.

Analysis:

The article reviews the problems on human trafficking and shows its statistics in the countries facing this problem. The source seems to be reliable as it shows UN reports and opinions written on that issue. The article is useful as it shows the origins of the problem and the main hotspots as well as the statistics according to the highly rated places where such problems occur.

Current Events Articles Instructions and Grading Rubric


Issue: State labor investigators found 57 under-aged workers that were employed at the meatpacking plant in Iowa. The investigators had found different child violations for each under-aged worker and stated that they were exposed to various prohibited occupations.


Significances:


1)A spokeswoman for Iowa Workforce Development department stated that the number of under-aged workers is so far the largest in the Iowa case.
2) The previous year, agriprocessors fired four workers who were under-aged. However their documents stated they were old enough to work
3) At least twenty four under-aged workers, starting about the age of thirteen were arrested in a raid. Immigration authorities dismissed those criminal charges against the under-aged workers. However, many were placed in civil deportation proceedings.
4) When the workers were interviewed they admitted that they were forced to work for long hours on night shifts, at times up to seventeen hours and were not paid at all for the overtime.


Analysis:
1) The article is aimed at the description and the causes of a natural problem of under-aged child labor. Iowa is the case for the following article. The article is useful as it informs the reader of the problem on multiple scales, such as the law, human rights and industrial. It also gives formal details on the problem and measures taken to deal with it.
